5.5 Assignment: Critical Reflection Journal/Blog

What is new to my thinking or learning this past week?

I’ve often thought about how I learn best.  This past week has given me new insights and put a title on the types of learning.  I learned the difference between differentiated, individualized, and personalized learning. How we learn has changed since I was in school.  Technology and the internet have given us new opportunities to present information.  One such way is video screencasts.  This was a new concept for me, but I found it fun to present information in an engaging format.

How has this new information challenged me?

Using new forms of technology in the education process has challenged me to be open-minded to these new technologies.  Though I grew up without technology, it has radically changed how we present information and learn further details.  After reviewing all three types of learning presented this week, I most relate personalized learning.  However, as an educator, I have to be open to the other types so that I can best serve all of my students in the way they learn best.

How has this stretched my professional growth and development?

I believe that five essential elements are conducive to the learning process.  These elements can be applied to the types of learning discussed this week (i.e., differentiated, individualized, and personalized). 1.) The teacher’s role is to act as a guide.  2.) Students must have access to hands-on activities. 3.) Students should have choices and let their curiosity direct their learning. 4.) Students need the opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment. Finally, 5.) Technology must be incorporated into the student’s education.

All students are unique and have something special to bring to their education.  As an educator, my role is to assist my students in expressing themselves and play an active role in their educational process.

What are the implications of this week’s learning on my professional practice?

Education is not a one-size-fits-all discipline, and I believe it’s essential that my approach is tailored to the specific learning needs of each student.  I want to get to know my students as individuals to support and challenge them along their educational journey appropriately.    I believe my role as an educator is to nurture and encourage the life-long learning of my students.  I hope to encourage students to think creatively and explore their natural curiosity.

How can these new learnings impact my personal faith journey and my impact for the Kingdom?

Diana Senechal said, “Listening…involves a certain surrender, a willingness to sit with what one does not already know…listening requires us to stretch a little beyond what we know, expect or want.”  Learning seeks knowledge, and it is this noble pursuit of knowledge that challenges me to grow deeper in my faith journey.  Those that followed Jesus throughout the New Testament sought knowledge; they sought to learn new things.  I strive to listen, learn, and use my knowledge to teach others.
