2.5 Critical Reflection Journal Blog - Important Learnings Journal

What is new to my thinking or learning this past week?  How has this new information challenged me?  How has this stretched my professional growth and development?  What are the implications of this week’s learning on my professional practice?

This week’s blog discussion addresses the issue of assessment.  I’ll be honest and open that I have never been a big fan of assessments.  While I understand it is a method to determine whether a student has learned the material or concepts being taught, I have concluded it doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.  By my admission, I am not a test taker.  I have never done well on written tests and sometimes struggle to retain what I have learned.

This week we’ve explored authentic assessment along with formative and summative evaluation.  Though these were new terms to me, after reading the assigned material this week and doing additional research online, I realized that I had been exposed to these concepts. I found this week’s learning informative, as always. It has provided me with new learning to reinforce my educational journey further and prepare me for a future teaching role, whether in-person or online.

How can these new learnings be used to impact my personal faith journey and my impact for the Kingdom?

Just as we assess our students, I believe that according to scripture, God will assess us when we breathe our last breath.  Matthew 10:33 says, “But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.”  Each time we could share our faith, and we don’t, I believe we are doing what it says in Matthew 10:33.  I think He continually assesses how we are doing, and there will be a time when we have the final assessment.  Will we pass the test?  I sure hope I do.  I have faith and believe I will, but I am thankful for God’s grace and forgiveness because no matter how much knowledge I learn, I think I fail the assessment daily.  I wonder if God grades on a curve?
