Innovative Learning Environments & Disruptive Technologies

Write a reflective blog post on this week’s readings, Roundtable dialogue, and/or your action research learnings. The blog writing may be your choice, but it must be substantive, including outside scholarly works, etc.

In business theory, disruptive innovation or technology is an innovation that creates a new market and value network or enters at the bottom of an existing market and eventually displaces established market-leading firms, products, and alliances. However, in education, disruptive technologies are modern technological advances, social-emotional learning models, and social-justice education are just some of the disruptive approaches available to school leaders to prepare students from diverse backgrounds to succeed academically and move into a globalized workforce.

Disruptive technology is an innovation that significantly alters how consumers, industries, educational institutions, or businesses operate. It displaces a well-established product or technology, creating a new sector or market. New technology can either be sustaining or disruptive.  Is online education a disruptive technology?  While distance education is certainly not a sustaining technology, distance education, virtual schooling, and e-learning are disruptive.

Three types of educational technologies are Synchronous and Asynchronous. With this first type, learning can occur in or out of the classroom.  The second type is Linear Learning.  Computer-based training (CBT) refers to self-paced learning activities delivered on a computer or handheld device such as a tablet or smartphone. The last type is Collaborative Learning.

As I learned about Innovative Learning Environments & Disruptive Technologies this week, I had to ask the question: Is disruptive technology or innovation good or bad?  In most cases, disruptions are associated with something bad. When you combine disruptive elements with technology, things can start to sound even worse. After all, no one wants a disruption in technology. Luckily, disruptive technology means something else–and it's typically a good thing for the end user.

So, what is the purpose, and why is disruptive technology important, especially in education?   Disruptive technology can create a new market, providing greater efficiency, quality, and benefits for customers and the organization.  In the case of educational institutions, disruptive technology can help us better educate students and reach a new generation of learners who have been deeply immersed in technology their entire lives.
