The Impact of Stress on Academic Performance of Online Students
Research continues on the impact of stress on the academic performance of online students. Studies continue to show that academic performance is crucial to reach a high level of academic success, making students more competitive in the job market and strongly predicting their future social and occupational success. Moreover, academic performance is also essential due to the expectations of employers and a desire to outperform the competition.
Though stress provides stimulation that, to a certain level, can be considered by some as a type of academic motivation, sustained stress can lower academic performance and potentially lead to severe health problems. In the literature examined this week, controversial findings regarding the correlation between stress and students’ academic performance have been discovered.
Some studies reviewed showed that students with higher stress had lower grade point averages (GPAs), whereas, in contrast, another study found no correlation between stress and academic performance. One consideration might be that stress's role in academic performance may depend on the stress level itself. Nevertheless, further understanding regarding the amount and sources of stress and the associations of stress with academic performance is necessary. However, most research reviewed indicates that measures are needed to reduce stress for the improved academic performance of the students. Therefore, additional research should focus on developing and evaluating the effects of stress-reducing strategies.
